Coaching Director Illia Song has been coaching soccer for 25+ years and is regarded as one of the best trainers in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has run boys and girls programs ranging from U8 – U23, coaching at top area clubs: Bay Oaks SC, Marin FC, Burlingame Soccer Club, Peninsula Soccer Club, Juventus Sport Club and San Francisco Vikings Soccer Club. He also has two children who played varsity soccer for four years at University High School in San Francisco. His son was recruited by and played four years at Yale University and his daughter was recruited by and captained four years at Swarthmore College. Coaching Director Illia Song formed the first SF Aftershocks FC team in 1996. More recently, he has received the following awards:
o 2017 US Youth Soccer Region IV Girls Competitive Coach of the Year
o 2016 Cal North Girls Competitive Coach of the Year District 1
o 2016 Cal North Girls Competitive State Coach of the Year
As a fourth generation San Franciscan, Technical Director Craig Winans grew up playing soccer in “The City” — where he was eventually recruited by and played soccer intercollegiately at the U.S. Air Force Academy. His coaching career started even sooner though. In his Freshmen year of high school, at the age of 14, Craig started coaching a team of 12-13 year old boys by himself. His coaching career has grown to include six years coaching Division I Women’s Soccer at San Jose State University, where they won two Western Athletic Conference championships, as well as a being a coach at the State and Regional Olympic Development levels. This year marks his 50th year of coaching soccer.
In addition to coaching, Coach Winans has been a Coaching Instructor for U.S. Soccer since 1994, teaching coaches the proper way to coach according to our nation’s governing body philosophy. He has also volunteered as Olympic Development Program Coordinator and Coaching Coordinator at the District level. He was twice elected District Commissioner and Second Vice Chairperson at the State level. In 2015, Craig was invited and accepted a role in being part of a small group of 50 soccer influencers across the United States tasked with making changes to Coaching Education methods and creating the Player Development Initiatives needed to modernize youth soccer. The focus of this group was to make soccer the preeminent sport in the United States.
Technical Director Craig Winans holds a USSF A license with United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA) National, Advanced National, Premier, National Goalkeeping and Futsal Level 1 diplomas, in addition to completing the Norcal Premier Soccer – International Coaching Course.
